'Nurturing and Retaining' is the new mantra in hiring policies, students of UMA are told

'Hiring and firing is out - talent acquisition and nurturing staff is in.'At least, this was what Amitabha Chattopadhyay, Regional Vice-President (East) of Naukri.com told students at the Usha Martin Academy, Kolkata on 16th July, 2012.

Brought in as a corporate guest lecturer on the changing realities of talent acquisition, he said India's changing demographics are in turn influencing and transforming the hiring policies of companies.

He said that the old, harsh hire-and-fire ways are being cast aside in favour of hiring, nurturing and retaining staff.

Pointing out that India is a youthful nation - with the median age being 26 years - Chattopadhyay said that 70 million people were expected to enter the workforce over the next five years, with e-commerce and e-recruitment surging in popularity.

With this as a background, perhaps it is to be expected that 'job search' is one of the most popular activities on the Internet in India. He also noted that India is among the top five Internet markets in the world, with the Internet showing increasing penetration into smaller towns and rural areas in the country.

Amitabha Chattopadhyay expanded on his theme of the future and power of the internet. He told UMA students that the demographic dividend coupled with growing internet penetration would catapult India to economic growth and prosperity.

With around 14 years of experience in sales, marketing, business development and team management, he certainly knows what he is talking about. He has proven his abilities in expanding markets, brand building, generating new business and targeting potential customers.

On receiving his Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounts from the University of Calcutta and MBA in Marketing and Human Resources from the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, he started out as centre manager for Datapro Infoworld Ltd. From there, he moved on to serve as territory manager at KarROX Technologies Ltd. Next, he served as territory head in marketing for Xansa India before joining Naukri.com, first as associate vice-president and then as vice-president of sales.
